Degenerative Disc Disease

Despite the name, degenerative disc disease is not an illness. It describes the normal wear that spinal discs go through with age — they lose water content, become thinner, and cushion less effectively. Many people have disc degeneration without symptoms; for others it contributes to stiffness and recurring back or neck pain.

Common signs

  • Low back or neck pain that comes and goes
  • Stiffness after sitting or first thing in the morning
  • Pain that is worse with bending, lifting, or twisting
  • Pain that eases with walking or changing position

How Dr. Raby evaluates it

A history, movement and orthopedic exam, and X-rays when indicated. X-rays can show reduced disc height and bone changes that suggest degeneration. Dr. Raby will talk through what the findings mean for you and what a realistic goal for care looks like.

Care options at Dynamic Chiropractic

Care for degenerative discs focuses on keeping the spine moving well and supporting it with stronger muscles. A plan may include chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, SoftWave therapy, and a stretching and strengthening program you continue at home.
